The culmination of a doctoral program is usually the presentation of a 200 to 300 page dissertation to an academic committee, but understanding how to publish a dissertation for a wider audience can potentially help scholars long after they have received their degrees.Although finishing your dissertation may be the final hurdle to completing your doctorate, getting it published may be an important step toward your career as a psychologist. Indeed, academic psychologists are not the only ones expected to publish-research is increasingly a part of clinical positions, says University of Rochester Medical Center associate professor Robert Pollard Jr., PhD.Make sure you critically engage fully with the relevant literature; again, you may need to review what has been published since you wrote your dissertation and include some new references. When reworking your paper, try and cite other authors who have also recently published in your chosen journal.
Depending on the method supported by your graduate school, you will submit your electronic (PDF) manuscript in one of two ways: Through ProQuest’s online submission tool, ETD Administrator Through your university’s established electronic submission method.In this sense, if your supervisor has not already suggested something then it is unlikely that you are going to publish your dissertation in a book. Your best bet would be to look at journals. While they do tend to have word limits, most journals would easily take something longer if it was of good quality.
However it may be rewritten as a short article and submitted, either by yourself, with your supervisor, or more likely, as a publication primarily written by your supervisor but using part of your dissertation (data for instance) and with you as a (subsequent) named author.
